Soccer shoes, cleats, boots, or whatever you call them are one of the most important pieces of equipment used to play soccer. There are plenty of options available at all price ranges, but what should you look for so that you and your child are happy?
First of all, please do not buy cleats that are a bit big so that your child can grow into them. That extra bit of wiggle room is a sprained ankle waiting to happen - believe me, I know! My feet grew so fast that it seemed like a great idea to my parents, but because of the numerous injuries I suffered, I still wear a brace to this day.
There are great options with all of the major brands, and you can find great deals online, but my advice would be to look at your local sporting goods store. Often times you can find a deal where you get a pair of cleats, a ball, and shin guards for a low price. I got some really great ones for my daughter that she loved and they were really inexpensive (and they were a cool Italian brand!). The basic molded bottom ones are the way to go in my book, especially for younger players. You can always spend more if you want and purchase different types for different playing conditions as they get more serious about the game.
The next thing I would suggest is do some research before you buy. There are brands that run narrower and some that run wider. For instance, I have a narrow foot, so I usually wear Adidas or Nike, but the ones I wear now when I coach are Diadora. This is important again, because you want as little wiggle room as possible!
Whatever you decide, as long as you and your child are happy and enjoy the game, you've made the right choice!
I hope this helps! See you on the pitch!
